Lapu-Lapu

A shrine to Lapu-Lapu. Lapu-Lapu was our first national hero. He was the person who killed Magellan. In the 1500's when Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu, he befriended Rajah Humabon and became good buddies with him. Rajah Humabon was in constant war with the neighboring island, Mactan now called Lapu-Lapu city in honor of the national hero. Ferdinand Magellan was eager to please his new friend assured Rajah Humabon, "Don't worry, we'll take care of him. I have 3 boats with own modern muskets and weapons. He seemed to be over confident.

Lapu-Lapu came with thousands of his people and equipped with thier bolos, spears, and bows and arrows, as they approach Cebu. Magellan's men were less than a hundred. Naturally, Magellan lost this battle and lost his life. He died at the hands of Lapu-Lapu who proudly chopped of his head exhibiting to the enemies.
This battle was chronicled by Pigafetta, who was a historian in the ship of Magellan and later returned to Spain with the last remaining single ship of Magellan.
